Magic Crystals

Did you know that you can grow crystals?  All you need is salt and hot water!  Crystals form when atoms (the building blocks that make up all things) stick together and arrange themselves in a pattern.  This month, try growing your very own salt crystals and see what shape they create!

What You Need

1. 3/4 cup boiling water

2. 1/2 cup salt

3. Pencil

4. Piece of string

5. Empty glass jar

What You Do
 1. Boil 3/4 cup water.  IMG_0102.jpeg
2. Measure 1/2 cup of salt.  Stir the salt into the boiling water until most of the salt is dissolved.
3. Pour the salt water mixture into an empty glass jar. IMG_0106.jpeg
4. Tie a piece of string in the middle of a pencil. IMG_0107.jpeg
5. Lay the pencil over the top of the glass jar so the string hangs into the salt water mixture. IMG_0108.jpeg
 6. Now comes the the jar some place where it won't be disturbed for several hours.  Check on your jar every hour or so.  You may even need to wait a whole day for the crystals to form.  Hint: Crystals grow differently in all sorts of conditions.  For example, crystals will look different if you place them in a cool place versus a warm place.
